Out of the thousands of channels offered by cable and satellite providers, how many are consumers actually watching on a regular basis? Fifteen? Ten? Yet so many pay a hundred plus dollars every month to maintain a service of which theyre only using a fraction.
The kicker is that they dont have to. With the advent of streaming content set top boxes like Roku and Apple TV, and niche-filling adult content apps like SugarDVD, its simple to get thousands of shows, movies and games on your TV. Consumers can break up their cable bundles and still get the entertainment they want. The perks are obvious: no commercials, no channel surfing, just chosen content, instantly on your television.
Roku in particular is a set top box that can host hundreds of apps through a TV. It streams everything from the ubiquitous Netflix and Hulu Plus to HBO Go, Amazon, Pandoraeven Angry Birds. Because of this system its cheaper to break up expensive cable bundles and create a specifically tailored entertainment lineup. For Roku, the box itself starts at $ 49.99, and each new app is around $ 8 a month. Netflix and Hulu represent the majority of mainstream movies and TV people typically watch through cable, and together they run $ 16 a month. A giant reduction in typical cable and satellite rates.
And to answer the question everyone is thinking but no one will ask: adult content need not be missing from the lineup. Getting porn on a pay-per-view or paid channel basis through a cable provider is expensive, but amateurish free internet porn isnt the only option on the market, either. There are a few adult film apps that run on boxes like these (though Apple TV notably does not support any), the most prominent being SugarDVD, the Netflix equivalent for Roku porn movies.
In business since 2002, SugarDVD still runs a DVD mailing program. We all know Netflix also had its humble beginnings as such, but has since become the ultimate player in the market for streaming movies, and expanded its app onto every platform from gaming consoles to e-readers. Netflix now runs on over 800 devices. SugarDVD appears to be following the same rapid growth business model as it continues to expand its streaming service to new platforms.
This isnt your grandmothers porn. The SugarDVD adult Roku app has a number of features and over a thousand new release movies. Users can mark their favorite films on the film detail page and later quickly find those films in a Favorites folder on the main categories screen. The app also follows a Netflix-esque rating system, through which users can rate the films theyve seen out of five stars. These average out to give the film an overall rating visible by all users. With these features, SugarDVD seems to be the most sophisticated adult Roku app on the market. To top it off, SugarDVD’s monthly subscription price of $ 8 is less than the cost of one adult pay-per-view movie from most cable providers.
In September, SugarDVD will also make their unlimited streaming service available on Android devices, including Amazons Kindle Fire.
